David Thewlis

Updated on October 24, 2013

Who is David Thewlis?

English writer and actor David Thewlis is known for a wide range of roles, from Lyons in War Horse to Knox Harrington in The Big Lebowski. His largest commercial success comes from the Harry Potter franchise. While he was originally considered for the role of Professor Quirrell, he was eventually cast as Professor Remus Lupin beginning in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

Born David Wheeler in 1963, Thewlis only decided to attend the Guildhall School of Music and Drama because his friends were attending. After graduating in 1984, he had to change his professional name because there was already a David Wheeler, so he chose to use his mother's maiden name instead.

David Thewlis most recently was seen as Lyons in War Horse. This Spielberg film is based off a novel and stage adaptation for the same name. The movie was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture, as well as a myriad of other awards. He has two movies in production for 2013, so there is much more to come from this talented actor.

Professor Remus Lupin

David Thewlis' Most Popular Role

David Thewlis began his role as Professor Remus Lupin in the third installment of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Professor Lupin had been a childhood friend of Harry's parents and provided him with a great deal of comfort and guidance. Thewlis had originally auditioned for the role of Professor Quirrell in the first film, but became the first choice to play Lupin. Thewlis continued with the role throughout four other films in the series.

Three reasons to love David Thewlis

While we all know there are plenty of reasons to love David Thewlis (like his impressive talent and almost 50 movie roles), these three fun facts are some of the reasons that he has become one of my favorite actors.

1) Even before his recurring role in the Harry Potter series, Thewlis had quite an acting resume. His role in the film Seven Years In Tibet even got him banned from entering China.

2) He is also a talented poet and novelist. In 2007, Thewlis published a novel called The Late Hector Kipling about an artist who paints pictures of large heads.

3) Thewlis wrote, directed, and starred in the movie Cheeky, which is about a widower who is convinced to go on a popular game show that his wife had signed him up for (and which ends up improving his life).

David Thewlis Autographs

Do you love collecting autographs from your favorite actors? While many of the David Thewlis autographs on the market are on images from Harry Potter, occasionally you can find one featuring one of his other roles (such as Knox Harrington from The Big Lebowski). Check out this collection of autographed images and see if there is one to add to your collection!

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

David Thewlis made his first appearance as Remus Lupin in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. In this film, you can see the young stars starting to grow up and realize the bigger picture of their adventure. There to guide them is Professor Lupin, an old friend of Harry's parents.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban [Blu-ray]
The Prisoner of Azkaban has always been one of my favorite books and movies in the Harry Potter series. While Harry had learned some things about his parents in the first two installments, The Prisoner of Azkaban introduces his parents childhood friends and gives him and chance to find out more. David Thewlis does an excellent job at Professor Lupin, a man who wants to help Harry and simultaneously is hiding a major secret.
