Best Gifts for Law Students

The Best Gifts for Law Students

The best gifts for law students can be practical, but wouldn't it be better to give your favorite law student something fun? Law school is an intense time. There is a constant stream of reading, outlining, and papers that keep most students busy. It can be tough to figure out what to buy them when a holiday, birthday, or graudation comes along. After all, law students frequently seem to have their own language and sense of humor that can leave others confused.

This lens is filled with a selection of my favorite gift ideas for law students. Ultimately, you should think about the personality and needs of the gift recipient (and what they might already have), but use these ideas as a jumping off point to begin your shopping.

Books for Law Students

In my experience, most law students love to read (although they don't often have enough time). While fiction in their favorite genre is always a great gift for law students, there are also many practical books that could help with studying and career planning.

What book you choose will depend on where in their law school career the gift recipient is. Someone who is just about to start law school will have different needs than someone who is about to graduate and looking towards the bar exam.

Law School Confidential: A Complete Guide to the Law School Experience: By Students, for Students
Law School Confidential: A Complete Guide to the Law School Experience: By Students, for Students
If the gift is for someone who is interested in attending law school, or has been accepted but not started, this is one of the best guides out there. It covers every part of the law school experience.

The Zen of Passing the Bar Exam
The Zen of Passing the Bar Exam
I recommend this title for students in their 1L or 2L year. While the bar may seem like it is in the remote future, understanding how it works will help them study in the present. Plus, the way this book explains how to write legal essays will help with every exam they take in law school. I wish I had read it sooner!

Managing Your Legal Career: Best Practices for Creating the Career You Want
Managing Your Legal Career: Best Practices for Creating the Career You Want
A 3L who has a looming graduation is probably focused on getting a great job and deciding what they want to do with their life. This hefty book is one of the most useful law-specific career guides.

Gift Cards for Professional Attire

While some law students are starting a second career and have a professional wardrobe, many of them have limited options when it comes to suits and other business clothing. It can be difficult to pick out great professional attire for someone else. While a shirt or tie is one option, also consider getting the law student a gift card to a store that sells clothing. This will allow the student to pick out something that fits their body and personality, plus fills in the gaps in their wardrobe.

Gift cards are one of the best gifts for law students because of the flexibility. Choose a card for a store that is located near the law school so the student can go in and try on different items. After all, it is difficult to buy a suit over the internet and find one that fits right!

Coffee Mugs

If there is one thing that professional students go through a lot of, it is coffee. Travel mugs are a must for hauling a hot cup around the law building without spilling on your notes. There are many coffee mugs out there with legal humor that would make a perfect gift for law students.

As with the T-Shirts sold through Zazzle, these mugs are available in a variety of styles and can be customized. Designs are available on both classic and travel mugs, so look for the design you like and customize the product for your favorite law student!

Law School T-Shirts

There are tons of humorous t-shirts that make great gifts for law students. If you have ever attended law school, you may get the jokes in these shirts.

There are a number of great places to buy t-shirts online, but when I am looking for gifts for law students I think of Zazzle. Zazzle allows artists to create their own products to sell, so there is a huge selection. Plus, most of the products are customizable. All of these t-shirts are available in men's and women's styles and you can customize the colors on many of them. Gifts are more special when you put your own touches on them.

Movies about Law School and the Legal Profession

There are a ton of movies about law school and the legal profession. Some are accurate, some are entertaining, and some will make law students laugh because they are so far from the truth. One of the most classic law school movies is The Paper Chase. Although many modern law schools outside the top tier don't have the same competitive nature anymore, there is plenty of truth to be found in how that movie relates the law school experience. It is one that almost every law student watches at some point in their education.

Legally Blonde
Legally Blonde
I have to admit that this movie was a bit of an inspiration for me. You may not wear as much pink, but you have to admire her passion.

To Kill a Mockingbird
To Kill a Mockingbird
This may be one of the first books that people read about the legal system, and the movie adaptation has stood the test of time.

The Paper Chase [DVD]
The Paper Chase [DVD]
This is one intense movie, so it may not accurately describe many modern law schools, but it will give you a glimpse into law school life.

Philadelphia
Philadelphia
Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington are exceptional in this movie, which will make you want to stand up for what is right.

The Firm
The Firm
Some firms have a dark side, as Tom Cruise found out.
